AWS VPC Basics: Understanding Cloud Networking
Networking allows cloud resources to communicate with each other and, when configured, with the internet. Amazon Virtual Private Cloud, or Amazon VPC, provides the networking foundation for many AWS workloads.
Understanding VPC basics helps beginners learn how applications communicate securely.
What Is Amazon VPC?
Amazon VPC allows you to create a logically isolated virtual network for AWS resources.
Within a VPC, you can configure IP address ranges, subnets, routing, and network security settings.
For example, an application might place its public-facing web server in one subnet and its database in a private subnet.
Important VPC Components
1. IP Address Range
When creating a VPC, you choose an IPv4 CIDR block that defines its address range.
2. Subnets
Subnets divide the VPC address range into smaller networks. They are associated with specific Availability Zones.
3. Route Tables
Route tables define where network traffic should be directed.
4. Internet Gateway
An internet gateway enables communication between a VPC and the internet when routes and security settings permit it.
5. Security Groups
Security groups control permitted traffic for supported resources and act as stateful virtual firewalls.
6. Network ACLs
Network access control lists provide subnet-level traffic filtering and are stateless.
Public and Private Subnets
A public subnet typically has a route to an internet gateway. Resources also need suitable IP addressing and security configuration to communicate directly with the internet.
A private subnet does not have a direct route to an internet gateway for direct internet communication. Outbound internet access can be provided through other configurations, such as a NAT gateway.
Private subnets are commonly used for databases and internal application services.
Why Is VPC Important?
- Organize cloud resources into networks.
- Control network traffic.
- Separate application components.
- Connect cloud resources to other networks.
- Design secure and resilient architectures.
Conclusion
Amazon VPC is a core AWS networking service. Learning about CIDR blocks, subnets, route tables, and gateways provides a strong foundation for designing cloud infrastructure.
